Competition Rules

Club Competitions - Information & Rules

The club has a full range of internal competitions. Members can enter as many competitions as they wish with the proviso that they are available for the finals (see the Competition Rules). The current cost is £1 per entry. The aim is to foster friendly competition within the club. Given sufficient interest the following competitions will be available to full members:

Singles: 4-wood and 2-wood. Men only / Women only / Mixed for the Margaret Snape Trophy (men and women). The winner is the first player to reach 21 points.

Pairs: 4-wood and 2-wood. Men only / Women only / Mixed (one man & one woman per team). Please note new rule: 4 wood pairs play 18 ends and 2 wood pairs play 21 ends.

Triples:

  • Three competitions: Men only / Women only / Mixed (each team to include men & women).
  • Preliminary rounds (including Quarters & Semis) play 15 ends. Finals play 18 ends.
  • Triples competition draws will take place 2 weeks prior to the date of each event.
  • Team members are expected to inform their Skip as soon as possible if they find they cannot play.
  • Skips are to check availability of their players the day before the event. As soon as they know about any non-availability, Skips must inform the CS. Reserves will then be contacted and if unavailable, the CS will try to find volunteer substitutes. If that isn’t possible, such unfilled teams will be withdrawn from competition. The draw will then be made.

Finals:

  • Pairs and Singles Finals will be held over one whole weekend in September (weather permitting).
  • Triples Games including the final will be played on selected days, Men’s, and Ladies’ competitions to be played on one day and a separate play date for the Mixed competition.

Organisation of Competition Matches:

  • This will be done by the Competitions Secretary (CS). Matches will be arranged in an appropriate structure of knockout rounds, depending on the number of competitors or competing teams.
  • Teams will be selected by means of a fair draw, as will reserves.
  • Arrangements will be made to prevent any competitor from being drawn as a reserve in more than one of the team competitions.
  • The Draw for each competition will be displayed on the notice board (by the changing rooms), with deadlines for completion of each round.
  • All Semi-Finals must be played by the end of August 2022.
  • The draw sheets will be updated by the CS as the competitions progress through the rounds.
  • In the event that only three competitors/teams enter any competition, it will be organized as a round-robin with the CS publishing the scoring system before the start of the competition.

Competition Rules

  1. The player or team skip in the upper position shall be termed the ‘Challenger’.
  2. The Challenger must contact their opposition to arrange a date and time for the game to take place before the deadline. Failure to make reasonable efforts in this could lead to the Challenger being scratched by the CS. However, subject to circumstances and genuine need, the CS may allow deadlines to slip for a short period of time.
  3. For Singles only, the Challenger must provide an approved Marker. It is good practice to choose someone who is not a relative or partner.
  4. Late arrival/No show: If a player or team arrives more than 20 minutes late or fails to turn up for an arranged match, without prior notice, they must then forfeit the game in favour of the opposition. A scratched player or skip of a scratched team has the right to appeal to the Committee via the Club Captain.
  5. The Score sheet should be signed by the skips after ensuring that the card contains the name of the competition being played, the names of the competitors and the results having been verified as being correctly recorded. In Singles, both competitors should sign the score card.
  6. Completed score cards must be placed in the white box on the notice board. The CS will enter results on the main notice board.
  7. Substitutes: A player who is unable to play for his original team through no fault of his/her own may join another team as a substitute, but cannot then go on to substitute in any other team in that competition, including his/her original team. No new substitutes will be permitted to play in any final.

How members can help the competitions to run smoothly

Competitors/teams should resolve any issues themselves as far as possible and the CS will offer help if needed. The smooth running of the competitions will be helped by the following:

  1. Complete and submit the Competitions Entry form as instructed. Try to attend the Signing-on session to do this, but entries will be accepted until the end of April.
  2. DO NOT enter any competition if you know that you are unable to play on the day set for the Finals or are unsure about it.
  3. Make a note or take a copy of all the competitions that you have entered and their deadlines. Keeping to deadlines is very important. It facilitates the smooth running of all competitions, enabling the final rounds to be reached on time.
  4. Please check the Notice Board regularly for any changes that may occur.
  5. If you are the Challenged and your Challenger has not made contact near to the deadline, then please contact them to make alternative arrangements. This will help avoid the CS needing to scratch competitors. The scope for extending deadlines is limited
  6. If you are unable to play in any pre-arranged game, please let your opponent know as soon as possible as well as the Marker in singles. Please try to arrange a new date prior to the deadline. For Pairs and Triples, don't forget to let your teammates know so that a substitute can be found for you.
  7. Don't forget the challenger needs to book your rink for the game.
